Problems that may occur during the use of OP-4 Octylphenol Polyoxyethylene Ether are usually classified into the following categories. It is recommended to investigate one by one based on specific manifestations:
1. Poor emulsification effect: If phenomena such as layering or demulsification occur in pesticide formulations, metalworking fluids, or cleaning agent formulations, please check: ① Whether the addition amount of OP-4 is within a reasonable range (usually 2%~10% of the total formulation, which needs to be optimized through experiments based on the specific system); ② Whether the HLB value of the system matches — OP-4 is a lipophilic emulsifier (n≈4, with a low HLB value), suitable for W/O (water-in-oil) emulsion systems. If O/W (oil-in-water) emulsification is required, consider compounding with emulsifiers having higher HLB values; ③ Whether the type of oil phase or water hardness has changed. Calcium and magnesium ions in hard water may affect emulsion stability. Although OP-4 itself has excellent hard water stability, it is still recommended to verify through small-scale tests.
2. Decreased penetration or leveling performance: In textile dyeing and finishing applications, if insufficient penetration or color spots are found, please check: ① Whether the treatment bath temperature is appropriate — the cloud point of OP-4 affects its surface activity, and excessively high temperatures may cause it to precipitate from the aqueous phase; ② Whether the concentration of OP-4 in the working solution has decreased due to carryover loss, and supplement if necessary; ③ Whether there is compatibility issue between residual pretreatment auxiliaries on the fabric and OP-4.
3. Abnormal increase in foam: OP-4 itself is a low-foaming surfactant. If abnormal foam increase occurs, it may be due to synergistic foaming effects of other components (such as anionic surfactants) in the formulation, or contamination of the system. It is recommended to check raw material purity and compatibility of compounding components.
4. Abnormal appearance of the product (turbidity, layering, color deepening): Please confirm whether storage conditions meet requirements (recommended 5°C~40°C, sealed and protected from light). If the product has experienced freezing or overheating, it may cause structural changes. It is recommended to take a sample for small-scale testing to verify performance before deciding whether to continue use.
If safety incidents such as skin contact, eye contact, or leakage occur during use, handle immediately according to the following procedures:
