Solubilizer S-15 (PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil) is a nonionic surfactant and is not classified as a hazardous chemical under GHS classification criteria. It has low acute oral toxicity (rat LD₅₀ > 2000 mg/kg), is non-irritating and non-sensitizing to skin, and has a high safety profile under normal use conditions. Nevertheless, as an industrial chemical, it should be handled following good industrial hygiene practices to avoid unnecessary exposure.
In practical use, the main concern with this product is the risk of eye contact. Although it does not meet hazard classification criteria, contact with eyes may cause mild temporary discomfort. Additionally, although the product does not pose a flammability or explosion risk at high temperatures (closed cup flash point > 100 °C), general fire prevention measures are still recommended. It has excellent biodegradability (> 60% degradation over 28 days under OECD 301B criteria) and is relatively environmentally friendly.
| Incident Type | Treatment Method |
|---|---|
| Eye Contact | Immediately rinse gently with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes; remove contact lenses if easy to do, then continue rinsing; if irritation persists, seek medical attention. |
| Skin Contact | Immediately remove contaminated clothing and wash with plenty of soap and water; if discomfort occurs, seek medical advice. |
| Inhalation | Move person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing; if feeling unwell, call a poison control center or seek medical attention. |
| Ingestion | Rinse mouth, do not induce vomiting in an unconscious person; immediately seek medical help and provide the safety data sheet or label. |
| Spill Handling | Small spill: Contain with inert absorbent material (e.g., sand, diatomaceous earth) and collect in a closed container for disposal according to regulations. Large spill: Contain to prevent entry into drains or waterways, clean up and rinse residue with water. |
| Fire | Product itself is not flammable; use water spray, dry powder, carbon dioxide, or alcohol-resistant foam to extinguish; firefighters should wear self-contained positive pressure breathing apparatus and full protective clothing. |
In practical formulation applications, it is recommended to determine the optimal dosage through small-scale trials. Solubilizer S-15 is compatible with various anionic, cationic, and other nonionic surfactants; ensure thorough stirring during compounding to achieve uniform dispersion. In pesticide microemulsions or transparent personal care product systems, it is recommended to gradually add the substance to be solubilized while stirring until the system becomes clear, avoiding the addition of large amounts at once which may result in incomplete solubilization.
