Span S-85 (Sorbitan trioleate) is a highly lipophilic nonionic surfactant. Although it is not classified as a hazardous chemical under GHS, standard industrial chemical handling practices must still be followed during use. Under normal use conditions, this product does not cause significant acute health hazards, but prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause slight dryness, and it is mildly irritating to the eyes.

When using, it should be noted that Span S-85 is an amber to brownish-yellow viscous oily liquid with high viscosity, so attention should be paid to ease of handling during dispensing and weighing. Due to its strong lipophilic nature (very low HLB value), it is typically used as an emulsifier in water-in-oil (W/O) systems in formulation design, and it is recommended to be compounded with other emulsifiers for optimal emulsification results.
