Castor Oil Polyoxyethylene Ether EL-90 is a nonionic surfactant polymerized from castor oil and ethylene oxide, widely used in various industrial fields such as pesticides, textiles, cosmetics, and metal processing due to its excellent emulsifying, dispersing, and wetting properties.
Detailed Description
Castor Oil Polyoxyethylene Ether EL-90 (CAS No.: 61791-12-6), also known as PEG-90 Castor Oil or Polyoxyethylene (90) Castor Oil, is a typical nonionic surfactant. It uses natural castor oil as raw material and introduces approximately 90 ethylene oxide (EO) chain segments through ethoxylation reaction, thereby retaining both hydrophobic fatty acid chains and hydrophilic polyoxyethylene long chains in the molecular structure, giving it excellent amphiphilic properties.
The product typically appears as a light yellow to yellow paste or viscous liquid, with high purity and outstanding surface activity. With its strong emulsifying ability, EL-90 can effectively reduce the oil-water interfacial tension, showing excellent emulsifying stability for various oil phases and solvent systems. At the same time, it also has significant solubilizing and dispersing functions, greatly improving the solubility and dispersion uniformity of poorly soluble substances in the system.
In terms of safety, EL-90 is not classified as a hazardous chemical, with extremely low acute oral toxicity (rat oral LD50 > 5,000 mg/kg), no skin irritation, and only mild reversible eye irritation. It has good biodegradability and is an environmentally friendly green auxiliary.

Application Recommendations
- Agrochemicals: As a key emulsifying and solubilizing component in pesticide emulsifiable concentrates, microemulsions, and emulsion concentrates, helping active ingredients disperse uniformly, enhancing efficacy and field performance.
- Textile and Chemical Fiber Industry: Used as a core component of fiber finishes, imparting good smoothness, cohesion, and antistatic properties to synthetic fibers; also applicable in pretreatment, dyeing, and finishing auxiliaries.
- Industrial Emulsification and Dispersion: Suitable as an emulsifier in emulsion polymerization (e.g., acrylic acid, vinyl acetate monomer systems), as well as in formulations for metalworking fluids, leather auxiliaries, etc.
- Cosmetics and Personal Care: As a mild nonionic emulsifier and solubilizer, used in creams, lotions, shampoos, and body wash formulations.
- Detergents: Enhances detergency, dispersibility, and foam control of household and industrial detergents, especially in heavy-duty liquid detergents and hard surface cleaners.
- Metalworking Fluids: Plays an emulsifying, lubricating, and anti-corrosion synergistic role in cutting fluids, grinding fluids, and rust prevention fluids.
Precautions
- The product may solidify or become cloudy at low temperatures, which is a normal physical change. Use indirect heating (such as a water bath) to slowly warm and stir until uniform; do not use open flames to directly heat the container.
- It is recommended to wear nitrile rubber gloves and chemical safety goggles during operation, and maintain good ventilation in the work area.
- Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated indoor warehouse, away from incompatible substances such as strong acids, strong bases, and strong oxidizers.
- Dispose of waste through qualified professional waste treatment companies; do not discard into drainage systems or the natural environment.
- For specific technical parameters (such as HLB value, cloud point, etc.), it is recommended to confirm with the supplier before use to ensure compatibility with actual process requirements.
