When using OP-4 Octylphenol Polyoxyethylene Ether, special attention must be paid to preventing skin/eye irritation and aquatic ecological hazards, strictly complying with personal protection and environmental protection regulations.
Detailed Description
OP-4 Octylphenol Polyoxyethylene Ether (also known as Emulsifier OP-4, Triton X-45) is a nonionic surfactant, appearing as a light yellow oily liquid. It has low acute oral toxicity (LD₅₀ > 2000 mg/kg), but its irritant risks and impact on the aquatic environment should still be noted during use.
This product is a chemical preparation, exhibiting excellent chemical stability in acidic, alkaline, and hard water media. Its low-foaming property makes it perform well in industrial processes requiring high foam control. However, during operation, it must be managed as a potentially hazardous chemical, with special attention to avoiding direct discharge into water bodies.
Flash point typically > 150 °C, non-flammable, but combustion under fire conditions may produce carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and irritating smoke. Firefighting personnel should take appropriate protective measures.
Key Precautions
Personal Protective Requirements
- Eye protection (H319 Causes serious eye irritation): Chemical safety goggles or face shields must be worn during operation. If accidentally contacted with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water or saline solution, keep eyelids open, for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention as soon as possible.
- Skin protection (H315 Causes skin irritation): Wear impermeable gloves and protective clothing to avoid direct skin contact. Thoroughly wash exposed areas after operation. In case of skin contact, immediately remove contaminated clothing and wash with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes.
- Respiratory protection: Avoid generating and inhaling vapors, mists, or aerosols. Use local exhaust or general ventilation when ventilation is insufficient. Wear appropriate respiratory protective equipment if necessary.
Storage Conditions
- Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse, away from heat sources, sparks, and open flames.
- Recommended storage temperature: 5 °C ~ 40 °C, avoiding extreme temperatures and drastic temperature changes.
- Immediately seal containers after use to prevent moisture absorption and contamination.
- Keep away from food, feed, and incompatible substances such as strong oxidizing agents and strong acids.
- The storage area floor should have anti-seepage capability, with containment berms or drainage channels.
Environmental Protection (H410 Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects)
- It is strictly forbidden to discharge the product directly into water bodies, sewers, or soil.
- Waste and contaminated containers must be disposed of by qualified institutions.
- In case of leakage, avoid flushing liquids into public waters, and strictly comply with local environmental regulations.
Leak Emergency Procedures
- Small spills: Cover with inert absorbent materials (e.g., sand, vermiculite) and collect into a dedicated sealed container for disposal as hazardous waste.
- Large spills: Construct containment dikes or pits to prevent spread to sewers and surface water. Cover with foam to suppress vapor generation, and transfer with explosion-proof pumps to dedicated collection containers.
- Evacuate non-essential personnel, isolate the spill area, and handle with appropriate protective equipment.
Firefighting Measures
- Suitable extinguishing media: water spray, alcohol-resistant foam, dry powder, carbon dioxide. Avoid using straight water streams.
- Firefighters should wear self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing.
- Cool containers exposed to fire with water spray to prevent overheating and rupture.
First Aid Measures
- Inhalation: Move the patient to fresh air and keep the airway open. If breathing stops, immediately perform artificial respiration and seek medical attention.
- Ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting. Rinse mouth with water and seek medical attention immediately. Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
- Workplace: No eating, drinking, or smoking. Eyewash stations and emergency showers should be available.
