OP-40 Octylphenol Ethoxylate is a high-performance nonionic surfactant, widely used in textile printing and dyeing, pesticide formulations, emulsion polymerization, industrial cleaning, and oilfield chemicals due to its excellent emulsifying, dispersing, and detergency capabilities.

Detailed Description

OP-40 Octylphenol Ethoxylate (CAS No.: 9036-19-5), also known as Emulsifier OP-40, Polyoxyethylene (40) Octyl Phenyl Ether, is a nonionic surfactant. Its molecular structure consists of a hydrophilic polyoxyethylene chain (approximately 40 EO units) and a lipophilic octylphenyl group. This amphiphilic structure endows it with excellent surface activity, significantly reducing the surface tension of aqueous solutions and the interfacial tension between oil and water.

This product exhibits outstanding chemical stability, capable of withstanding certain concentrations of acids, bases, and hard water, showing good compatibility in complex formulation systems. Even at low dosages, it can efficiently prepare and stabilize oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions, while displaying excellent dispersing, suspending, and detergency effects on various solid particles and oil stains. It maintains performance stability under high temperature and high shear conditions. It can be used in combination with nonionic, anionic, and cationic auxiliaries, offering strong formulation adaptability.

OP-40 is produced by Haian Guoli Chemical Co., Ltd., packaged in clean, dry drums or IBC totes, and should be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse, away from heat sources and ignition sources. The recommended storage temperature is between 5°C and 30°C.

Main Uses

  • Textile and Dyeing: Used as a key raw material for high-temperature leveling agents, dispersants, and detergents, improving dyeing uniformity and preventing dye aggregation.
  • Pesticide Formulations: Serves as an efficient emulsifier and synergist for preparing stable emulsifiable concentrates, aqueous emulsions, and other formulations, enhancing the wetting and spreading properties of the spray solution.
  • Emulsion Polymerization: Acts as a primary emulsifier in emulsion polymerization systems such as acrylates and vinyl acetate, imparting excellent mechanical and chemical stability to the latex.
  • Industrial and Household Cleaning: Suitable for metalworking, hard surface cleaning, and household liquid detergent formulations, providing excellent removal of heavy soils and oil stains.
  • Oilfield Chemicals: Used as an emulsifying viscosity reducer, playing an important role in oilfield exploitation.
  • Leather Industry: Used as a leather degreasing agent.
  • Paper Industry: Used as a deinking agent and dispersant.

Application Recommendations

When using OP-40, the dosage can be adjusted according to the specific application scenario. As an O/W emulsifier, it is recommended to stir thoroughly in the formulation; in emulsion polymerization systems, it can be used alone as the primary emulsifier or in combination with anionic emulsifiers to improve latex stability. In pesticide formulations, as an emulsifier and synergist, it helps enhance the wetting and spreading properties of the spray solution. The product can be compounded with nonionic, anionic, and cationic auxiliaries, offering flexible formulation design.

Precautions

  • Health Hazards: Harmful if swallowed and in contact with skin (H302+H312); Causes skin irritation (H315); Causes serious eye damage (H318). Chemical safety goggles, chemically resistant protective gloves, and protective clothing must be worn during operation.
  • Environmental Hazards: Very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects (H410). Do not discharge directly into the environment without treatment. Waste must be disposed of by qualified professional institutions.
  • First Aid Measures: In case of skin contact, wash immediately with plenty of soap and water; in case of eye contact, rinse immediately with water or saline for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention immediately; if swallowed, do not induce vomiting, rinse mouth immediately and drink plenty of water, seek medical attention promptly.
  • Storage Requirements: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse with a recommended temperature between 5°C and 30°C, away from heat sources, sparks, and open flames. Keep containers tightly closed.
