OP-40 octylphenol polyoxyethylene ether is a nonionic surfactant. Although it has excellent industrial application performance, its human toxicity and ecological toxicity cannot be ignored. According to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS), under the EU CLP regulation system, this product is classified as a chemical with clear health hazards and ecological hazards.
From the perspective of human health, OP-40 primarily causes harm through three routes: skin contact, eye contact, and accidental ingestion. Skin contact can lead to irritant reactions, such as redness, swelling, and pain; eye contact can cause severe eye damage, which is a serious risk at the H318 level; ingestion can produce systemic toxic effects. During routine operations, if protective measures are inadequate or ventilation is insufficient, inhalation of its vapor or mist may also cause respiratory discomfort. Therefore, operators must be equipped with full personal protective equipment, including chemical safety goggles, chemically resistant gloves (e.g., nitrile rubber gloves), and protective clothing.
From an ecological perspective, OP-40 is highly toxic to aquatic organisms (H400) with long-lasting effects (H410). This means that even extremely low concentrations can cause serious harm to fish, aquatic invertebrates, algae, etc. Moreover, this substance is not easily biodegradable in the natural environment, persisting in water bodies for a long time and continuously affecting aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, the product or its wastewater, waste liquid is strictly prohibited from being directly discharged into soil, waterways, or drainage systems. Spills and waste must be handed over to qualified professional institutions for harmless disposal.
| Hazard Category | Hazard Code | Specific Description |
|---|---|---|
| Acute toxicity (oral\/dermal) | H302 + H312 | Harmful if swallowed or in contact with skin |
| Skin corrosion\/irritation | H315 | Causes skin irritation |
| Serious eye damage\/eye irritation | H318 | Causes serious eye damage |
| Acute aquatic toxicity | H400 | Very toxic to aquatic life |
| Chronic aquatic toxicity | H410 | Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects |
When using OP-40 in formulation development or industrial production, it is recommended:
