As a nonionic surfactant, isooctanol penetrant OE-35 typically encounters problems in the following areas. It is recommended to troubleshoot step by step:
1. Unsatisfactory penetration effect/slower wetting speed
Possible causes: ① Insufficient dosage – The penetration power parameter of isooctanol penetrant OE-35 is ≤10 seconds (measured under standard concentration). If the contact angle is still large in actual working conditions, try increasing the dosage to 0.1%~0.5% (based on working fluid weight); ② Low water temperature – At low temperatures, surfactant molecular motion weakens, and penetration speed drops significantly. It is recommended to raise the treatment bath temperature to 20-40°C; ③ Electrolyte interference – Although this product has good resistance to hard water and alkali, extremely high concentrations of salts or strong alkalis may still weaken its surface activity. Try preparing a small sample with deionized water for comparison and verification.
2. Abnormally high foam
OE-35 is inherently a low-foam product. If excessive foam occurs during actual use, common causes include: ① Air entrainment during pumping or stirring – Check equipment seals to avoid air suction; ② Synergistic foaming when compounded with certain anionic surfactants – In this case, add a small amount of defoamer, or preferentially use low-foam anionic auxiliaries for compatibility; ③ Change in dispersion state when the usage temperature approaches the cloud point – The cloud point of this product is >100°C, so this issue does not occur under normal conditions, but if heating exceeds 80°C, pre-testing is recommended.
3. Product stratification, turbidity, or gelation
The normal appearance of isooctanol penetrant OE-35 is a colorless to slightly yellow liquid, with a freezing point < -10°C. If abnormal states occur: ① Low-temperature freezing – It may freeze when the ambient temperature is below -10°C. Place it in a 15~25°C environment to naturally warm up and stir appropriately to restore; performance is not affected; ② Dilution due to moisture absorption – This product is hygroscopic. If exposed to humid air for a long time after opening, it may absorb moisture, increasing surface tension. Be sure to seal the container promptly; ③ Mixing with incompatible chemicals – Strictly avoid direct mixing and storage with strong oxidizers or strong acids. Materials that have reacted should be discarded.
4. Precipitation or turbidity after formulation compounding
This product has good compatibility with nonionic, anionic, and cationic auxiliaries. If precipitation occurs, check: ① Whether the system pH exceeds the stable range of 5~7. Extreme acidic or alkaline environments may cause polyoxyethylene chain breakage; ② Whether there are high concentrations of multivalent metal ions (e.g., Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Fe³⁺). Pre-treat with a chelating agent if necessary; ③ Whether the addition sequence is reasonable – It is recommended to pre-mix OE-35 with an equal amount of water before slowly adding other auxiliaries.

Isooctanol penetrant OE-35 is a low-toxicity substance (rat oral LD₅₀ > 5000 mg/kg), but nitrile gloves and protective goggles should still be worn during operation. If leakage or personal contact occurs during troubleshooting, immediately refer to the first aid measures in the SDS and contact the safety officer of Guoli Chemical as soon as possible.
