Stearic Acid Polyoxyethylene Ether SG-9 is a non-ionic surfactant with an HLB value of approximately 11.6, produced by the addition of ethylene oxide to stearic acid. It possesses excellent emulsifying, wetting, dispersing, and antistatic properties, and is widely used in various industrial fields such as textiles, cosmetics, metalworking, and pesticides.

Detailed Description

Stearic Acid Polyoxyethylene Ether SG-9, with the chemical name Polyoxyethylene (9) Stearate (CAS No.: 9004-99-3), has a molecular formula of C₁₈H₃₅O₂(OCH₂CH₂)nOH (n≈9) and a molecular weight of approximately 600. Industry aliases include: Polyethylene Glycol Monostearate, PEG-9 Stearate, Polyethylene Glycol Monostearate (9 EO). The product appears as a white to light yellow flaky solid with a melting point of 28–35°C, making it easy to handle and use.

As a non-ionic surfactant, SG-9 exhibits excellent compatibility and can be used in combination with anionic, cationic, and other non-ionic surfactants. It is chemically stable, maintaining its performance over a wide pH range, resistant to acids, alkalis, and hard water, and not easily affected by calcium and magnesium ions in water. The product has an HLB value of about 11.6, belonging to the category of O/W emulsifiers, and can effectively reduce the surface tension of liquids (approximately 31 mN/m), with a critical micelle concentration of about 0.07 g/L, allowing it to exhibit good interfacial activity at low concentrations.

The product has a monoester content of ≥80%, diester content of ≤20%, active substance content of ≥99%, and free alcohol of ≤3%. It is readily soluble in water, ethanol, acetone, and other organic solvents. The pH value of its aqueous solution (1% and 5%) is within the range of 5.0–7.0, making it a mild surfactant. The cloud point is approximately 85–95°C, and its low-foaming characteristics make it suitable for industrial scenarios where excessive foam is undesirable.

Application Recommendations

Stearic Acid Polyoxyethylene Ether SG-9 has a wide range of applications. The following are the main areas and suggested uses:

  • Textile Industry: Used as an emulsifier and antistatic agent in spinning oils, imparting excellent cohesion and smoothness to fibers; also used as a component in finishing softeners to improve fabric hand feel. Recommended dosage is adjusted according to the formulation system, typically 2%–8% in the oil agent.
  • Cosmetics and Personal Care: Used as an O/W emulsifier and solubilizer in creams, lotions, facial cleansers, shampoos, and shower gels. Recommended dosage is 1%–5%, helping to build a fine and stable emulsion system, imparting a soft, non-greasy skin feel to the product.
  • Metalworking Fluids: Serves as an emulsifier and lubricant in emulsified cutting fluids and grinding fluids. Recommended dosage is 3%–10%, promoting the dispersion of oily components in water and enhancing lubrication and cooling performance.
  • Pesticide Formulations: Used as an emulsifier in emulsifiable concentrates, emulsions, and other formulations to ensure uniform dispersion of active pesticide ingredients, improving thermal storage stability and field dilution emulsification performance. Recommended dosage is 2%–8%.
  • Plastics and Rubber Industry: Used as an internal antistatic agent and slip agent, suitable for polyolefins, PVC, etc. Recommended addition is 0.5%–2%.
  • Coatings and Inks: Used as a pigment wetting and dispersing agent and emulsion polymerization emulsifier. Recommended dosage is 0.5%–3%.

Precautions

  • Safe Handling: This product is classified as non-hazardous, but it is irritating to the eyes and respiratory system (R36/37/38). It is recommended to wear chemical safety goggles, protective clothing, and chemical-resistant gloves during operation, and avoid direct contact with skin and eyes. In case of eye contact, flush immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.
  • Storage Conditions: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse at temperatures not exceeding 35°C. Keep containers tightly closed, and avoid moisture and direct sunlight. Keep away from strong oxidizers and strong acids, etc.
