Usage and Recommended Addition Amount of Span S-20 Laurate

Detailed Description

Span S-20 laurate (Span 20) is a nonionic water-in-oil (W/O) emulsifier with an HLB value of approximately 8.6. It is typically used via the oil-phase pre-dissolution method. In practice, it should be added to the oil phase component, heated to 40–60°C, and stirred until fully dissolved. Then, the water phase is slowly added to the oil phase under high-speed homogenization to form a stable W/O emulsion system. If used for O/W emulsions (requiring combination with high-HLB emulsifiers), it is recommended to pair it with Tween series (e.g., Tween-20, Tween-80) to achieve the desired hydrophilic-lipophilic balance.

Span S-20 laurate is a viscous liquid or waxy solid at room temperature. If solidification or crystallization occurs at low temperatures, it is recommended to preheat and melt it in a 20–35°C water bath. Do NOT use open flames or excessive heat (temperatures above 80°C may cause ester bond cleavage and affect emulsification performance). Stir thoroughly before feeding to ensure accurate and consistent addition amounts per batch. This product has good compatibility with anionic, cationic, and other nonionic surfactants, allowing flexible compounding in complex formulations.

Important Note on Recommended Addition Amount: The product database of Guoli Chemical does not include specific recommended addition amounts for this product in various application fields. The following are reference dosage ranges based on general industry practices for surfactants and the HLB value (8.6) characteristics of this product. Actual dosage should be determined through experiments based on the formulation system.

Application Recommendations

Usage Method Overview: Add Span S-20 laurate to the oil phase according to the formulation amount, heat to 40–60°C with stirring to dissolve, then slowly add the water phase (or water phase containing hydrophilic emulsifiers) to the oil phase under high-speed homogenization. For O/W emulsions, combine with Tween series (HLB range typically 10–15).

General Reference Addition Amounts by Field (Industry experience, not from Guoli Chemical database):

  • Cosmetic Creams/Lotions: As a W/O emulsifier, recommended addition amount is 1%–5% of the total formulation. When combined with Tween, the ratio of Span to Tween is usually 1:1 to 1:3.
  • Food Bakery Fats/Non-dairy Creamer: Addition amount is generally 0.3%–1.0% of the total oil content, subject to GB 2760 food additive usage standards.
  • Pharmaceutical Creams/Ointment Bases: Recommended addition amount is 2%–8% of the base total, used in combination with cetyl alcohol, petrolatum, etc.
  • Pesticide Emulsifiable Concentrates/Emulsions in Water: As an emulsifier monomer, addition amount is usually 3%–10% of the total formulation, requiring combination with hydrophilic emulsifiers.
  • Textile Softeners/Antistatic Agents: Addition amount is 0.5%–3% of the working solution total.
  • Paint/Ink Pigment Dispersion: Recommended dosage is 1%–5% of the pigment amount, requiring pre-grinding dispersion.
  • Metalworking Fluids: As an emulsifier component, addition amount is 5%–15% of the concentrate total.

Precautions

  • This product is irritating to skin, eyes, and respiratory tract (Hazard symbol: Xi). Nitrile rubber gloves, chemical safety goggles, and long-sleeved work clothes must be worn during operation.
  • If combining with Tween series emulsifiers, calculate the required HLB value based on the oil phase characteristics of the target emulsion, then determine the compounding ratio of Span to Tween.
  • Emulsification temperature should not exceed 80°C to avoid ester bond hydrolysis, which may reduce product performance.
  • The pH of a 5% aqueous solution is 5.0–7.0; the product is stable in weakly acidic to neutral media. Under strongly alkaline conditions, slow saponification may occur.
  • Storage temperature is recommended at 5°C–35°C, away from strong oxidizers, strong acids, and strong bases, and avoid using copper containers.
  • Shelf life should not exceed 24 months from the production date, subject to the product analysis certificate.
  • The above reference addition amounts are industry general experience ranges. The actual formulation dosage should be determined through small-scale experiments to identify the optimal addition ratio.
