According to the clear classification in the Safety Data Sheet of Guoli Chemical, the ecotoxicity: Not classified as hazardous to the environment. This means that under the current evaluation standards of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), Span S-60 itself is not considered to cause acute or long-term harm to aquatic environments (e.g., fish, algae, daphnia).

In addition, the product has very low acute oral toxicity (rat oral LD₅₀ > 15 000 mg/kg) and is widely approved as a food additive (E491) and pharmaceutical excipient, which indirectly confirms its high biosafety. However, in the event of a large-scale spill, strict measures must still be taken to prevent its entry into drainage systems or natural water bodies, to avoid local oxygen depletion due to physical film-forming effects or impacts on water sensory properties.

During waste disposal, Span S-60 itself does not pose risks of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) or heavy metal accumulation, and can be incinerated or landfilled in accordance with local regulations. If incinerated with complete combustion, it mainly produces carbon dioxide and water; incomplete combustion may generate harmful gases such as carbon monoxide, which must be handled by qualified institutions in a standardized manner.

• Spill handling: In case of a small spill, use inert absorbent materials (e.g., sand, vermiculite) to cover and collect into a sealed container to prevent dust dispersion. Do not flush with water directly, avoid entry into sewers or soil.
• Wastewater treatment: Industrial wastewater containing this product should be collected in the enterprise's wastewater treatment plant and treated by biochemical processes such as activated sludge method before discharge, as Span S-60 has good biodegradability.
• Empty drums/packaging bags: The inner wall of the packaging container may have product residues; do not discard or repurpose arbitrarily. Entrust qualified environmental protection units for recycling or compliant disposal.

Precautions

Although the product itself has low environmental risk, for occupational health, note that this product is a mildly irritating substance, may cause skin and eye irritation (H315, H319).
