Emulsifier S-185/O-5 is a high-performance nonionic surfactant produced by Haian Guoli Chemical Co., Ltd. Its chemical name is fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether (stearyl alcohol polyoxyethylene ether). It has excellent emulsifying, wetting, dispersing, and solubilizing capabilities and is widely used in various industrial fields such as pesticides, textiles, cleaning, and coatings.
Detailed Description
Emulsifier S-185/O-5 (also known as polyoxyethylene (35) stearyl ether, steareth-35, PEG-35 stearyl ether, CAS number: 68439-49-6) is a nonionic surfactant produced by using C16-18 fatty alcohols as initiators and adding approximately 35 ethylene oxide (EO) molecules. Its appearance is a white to pale yellow paste, with an active matter content of ≥99% and low moisture content (≤1.0%), fully meeting the requirements of demanding industrial formulations.
The HLB value of this product is as high as 16-17, making it a typical O/W (oil-in-water) emulsifier. It is readily soluble in water, ethanol, acetone, and other organic solvents. It has excellent chemical stability, with outstanding resistance to acids, alkalis, hard water, and salts, maintaining high performance in complex water quality and acid-base environments. Additionally, it exhibits good compatibility with anionic, cationic, and other nonionic surfactants, offering high formulation flexibility. It can effectively reduce interfacial tension and enhance the long-term stability of mixed systems.
In terms of technical indicators, the cloud point of S-185/O-5 exceeds 100°C, and the pour point/melting point is approximately 30-35°C. This means it is a paste at room temperature and exhibits excellent surface activity after slight heating or dissolution in water. The pH value of its 1% and 5% aqueous solutions is maintained within the mild range of 5.0-7.0, which is friendly to substrates. The product has low to moderate foam, making it suitable for industrial processes where excessive foaming is undesirable.

Application Recommendations
Due to its extremely high hydrophilicity and strong emulsifying and dispersing efficiency, Emulsifier S-185/O-5 serves as a core additive in multiple industrial fields:
- Agrochemical Field: As a specialized emulsifier for pesticide emulsifiable concentrates, aqueous emulsions, and microemulsions, it ensures that the active ingredients rapidly self-emulsify and maintain a uniform droplet size in hard water or ambient temperature water dilutions, greatly enhancing the wetting and spreading performance of the spray solution on the target.
- Industrial Cleaning: In metal and hard surface degreaser formulations, it exhibits excellent ability to remove and re-disperse mineral oils, cutting oils, and even animal and vegetable oil soils, providing high cleaning efficiency and easy rinsing.
- Metal Processing and Textiles: It can be used to formulate emulsifying and lubricating components in synthetic cutting fluids to reduce tool friction; in textile pretreatment scouring and dyeing processes, it effectively removes fiber impurities, improving whiteness and dyeing uniformity.
- Leather and Latex: In leather chemicals, it promotes uniform emulsification and penetration of natural oils, giving the leather an ideal soft hand feel; in coating and ink systems, it aids in the thorough dispersion of pigments and resins, optimizing film gloss and storage stability.
Precautions
- Safety Warning: This product may cause skin and eye irritation (Category 2 irritant). It is harmful if swallowed and has persistent toxicity to aquatic organisms. When handling, impermeable gloves, goggles, and protective clothing must be worn.
- Ventilation and First Aid: Use only in well-ventilated areas to avoid inhalation of vapors. In case of eye contact, immediately flush with plenty of running water for at least 15 minutes while holding the eyelids open, and seek medical attention promptly.
- Storage and Packaging: This product is slightly hygroscopic. After opening, the remaining contents must be resealed tightly. Recommended storage temperature is between 5 and 40°C, away from high temperatures and strong oxidizing agents. Standard packaging includes 50 kg plastic drums, 200 kg plastic drums, and IBC totes.
- Environmental Measures: Due to its long-term adverse effects on the aquatic environment, any wastewater or spillage containing this product must not be discharged directly into water bodies or soil without treatment. In case of spillage, absorb with sand or inert vermiculite and dispose of properly.
