The full chemical name of emulsifier S-185/O-5 (CAS No.: 68439-49-6) is fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether (octadecyl polyoxyethylene ether), which is a nonionic surfactant produced by addition polymerization of natural C16-18 fatty alcohols (mainly stearyl alcohol/octadecanol) with ethylene oxide (EO).
Its general molecular structure is RO(CH₂CH₂O)ₙH, where the hydrophobic group R is a long-chain alkyl of C16-18, the hydrophilic group is a polyoxyethylene chain, the average EO adduct number n≈35, and the molecular weight is about 1800. The active matter content of this product is as high as ≥99%, with free alcohol content ≤1.0% and moisture ≤1.0%. It is a refined grade product with high active matter and low moisture, capable of meeting stringent industrial formulation requirements.
Due to the presence of both a long hydrophobic carbon chain and 35 oxyethylene hydrophilic units in the molecular structure, this product exhibits excellent lipophilicity and hydrophilicity, with an HLB value between 16 and 17. It is readily soluble in water, ethanol, acetone and other organic solvents. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of micelles formed in water is approximately 10⁻⁵~10⁻⁴ mol/L.
