MOA-3 (AEO-3) is widely used in six major industries including personal care, household detergents, textile printing and dyeing, leather processing, metal cleaning, and emulsion polymerization, involving over a dozen key processes.
Detailed Description
MOA-3 (AEO-3) is a nonionic surfactant derived from C12-14 fatty alcohol as the starting material and 3 moles of ethylene oxide (EO). Its low HLB value (approximately 8-9) provides excellent lipophilicity and W/O (water-in-oil) emulsifying ability, along with outstanding wetting, penetrating, and dispersing properties. These characteristics determine its unique application value in multiple industrial fields.
In the industrial chain, MOA-3 is the core intermediate for producing sodium alcohol ether sulfate (AES) — through sulfonation and neutralization processes, AEO-3 is converted into AES, which is one of the most widely used anionic surfactants in products such as shampoos, body washes, and dishwashing liquids. Additionally, MOA-3 itself can be directly used as a nonionic surfactant component in various formulations, especially excelling in processes requiring emulsification, degreasing, and penetration functions.
This product has good chemical stability, resistance to acids, alkalis, and hard water, and can be well compounded with anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants, maintaining stable functional performance under complex working conditions and formulation systems. Therefore, it is selected as a key auxiliary agent by many industries.
Main Application Industries and Processes
1. Personal Care Industry
- AES Production Raw Material: MOA-3 is the key intermediate for synthesizing sodium laureth sulfate (AES). Through sulfonation/neutralization processes, AES is produced and widely used as the main surfactant in shampoos, body washes, hand soaps, etc.
- Formulation Intermediate: It can be directly used or modified for formulations of shampoos, body washes, facial cleansers, providing mild cleansing, foaming, and conditioning properties.
2. Detergent Industry
- Liquid Detergents: Used as a component in laundry liquids and dishwashing detergents, enhancing the product's penetrating, emulsifying, and detergency capabilities.
- Hard Surface Cleaners: Acts as a wetting and emulsifying component to improve oil removal efficiency.
3. Textile Printing and Dyeing Industry
- Scouring Process: Used as a scouring agent in the pretreatment stage to remove natural impurities like waxes and pectins from cotton fibers.
- Penetration Process: Utilizes its ability to rapidly reduce surface tension, promoting the penetration of treatment liquids into fiber bundles.
- Leveling Process: Acts as a leveling agent during dyeing, promoting uniform dye uptake and reducing color spots and shade differences.
4. Leather Processing Industry
- Degreasing Process: Efficiently removes natural fats from raw hides during the degreasing step, improving subsequent tanning and dyeing quality.
5. Metal Processing and Cleaning Industry
- Metal Surface Cleaning: Serves as an emulsifier and wetting agent to effectively remove oil and cutting fluid residues from metal parts.
- Metalworking Fluids: Acts as an emulsifying component in cutting and grinding fluids, providing cleaning, rust prevention, and lubrication functions.
6. Polymer Emulsion Industry
- Emulsion Polymerization: Used as an emulsifier in emulsion polymerization systems such as acrylates and styrene, stabilizing monomer droplets and controlling particle size distribution to ensure smooth polymerization.
Application Recommendations
The dosage of MOA-3 in formulations varies depending on the specific application scenario. As a raw material for AES production, its consumption is measured according to the sulfonation process. In detergents and textile auxiliaries, the recommended addition amount is 1% to 10% of the total formula weight. As an emulsifier in emulsion polymerization, the typical dosage is 1% to 5% of the monomer weight. It is recommended that users determine the optimal dosage through gradient tests based on actual process conditions. Due to its strong lipophilicity, for formulations requiring high HLB values, it is suggested to combine with hydrophilic surfactants (such as AEO-7, AEO-9, etc.) to achieve both emulsifying and solubilizing effects.
Precautions
- Irritation Protection: MOA-3 can cause skin and eye irritation (H315/H319). Always wear chemical safety goggles and chemically resistant gloves (e.g., nitrile rubber gloves) during handling.
- Environmental Safety: Harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects (H412). Do NOT discharge undiluted product directly into water bodies or drainage systems.
- Storage Conditions: Recommended storage temperature: 5°C to 35°C. Keep containers tightly closed, away from direct sunlight and high temperatures. Unopened product has a shelf life of one year from the production date.
- Compatibility: Compatible with anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants, but should avoid storage with strong oxidizing agents, strong acids, and strong bases.
