OP-13 Octylphenol Polyoxyethylene Ether is a nonionic surfactant with an HLB value of approximately 14.5, appearing as a colorless to light yellow oily liquid or paste at room temperature, with excellent hydrophilicity and emulsifying properties.
Detailed Description
OP-13 (Octylphenol Polyoxyethylene Ether, CAS No.: 9036-19-5) is produced by condensing octylphenol with approximately 13 moles of ethylene oxide. Its molecular formula is C8H17C6H4O(CH2CH2O)nH (n≈13), with a molecular weight of approximately 779. As a high-performance nonionic surfactant, this product has an effective active content of over 99%, with free alcohol content controlled below 1%, ensuring purity. It is readily soluble in water, with a stable pH range of 5.0~7.0 for its aqueous solution, exhibiting near-neutral properties, and good compatibility with anionic, cationic, and other nonionic surfactants, offering excellent formulation adaptability.
OP-13 has an optimized hydrophilic-lipophilic balance structure, with a cloud point in the range of 105~115°C, indicating good temperature resistance in aqueous systems. The surface tension of the product is between 30~32 mN\/m, and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) is as low as 0.1~0.3 g\/L, achieving significant interfacial activity at low dosages. The penetration power is approximately 30 seconds (canvas sinking method), with fast wetting rate and moderate foam characteristics, making it widely applicable in both industrial and household fields.
The product has a flash point above 150°C, is non-flammable, chemically stable, and exhibits excellent alkali resistance, maintaining activity across a wide pH range and in hard water conditions. It has some hygroscopicity and should be stored in a sealed container in a cool, dry place. The melting point is approximately 20~25°C, and it may become a paste at low temperatures; appropriate preheating treatment can be applied before use in winter.

Application Recommendations
Due to its HLB value of approximately 14.5 and outstanding hydrophilicity, OP-13 is particularly suitable for O\/W emulsification systems. In industrial cleaning formulations, the recommended dosage is 2%~8%, effectively removing heavy grease and oils. In textile printing and dyeing processing, when used as a scouring and penetrating agent, the recommended dosage is 0.5~3 g\/L. In pesticide emulsifiers, it is often compounded with emulsifiers with lower HLB values to achieve broader emulsification adaptability. In emulsion polymerization, the recommended dosage is 1%~5% of the monomer weight, helping to precisely control latex particle size.
At low temperatures, the product may become a paste. It can be preheated at 25~35°C before use and stirred evenly to restore fluidity without affecting performance. In alkaline systems such as metalworking fluids and leather degreasing, OP-13 exhibits excellent alkali stability, and compounding with anionic surfactants can produce synergistic effects.
Precautions
