OP-13 (Octylphenol Ethoxylate) is a high-performance nonionic surfactant. Although relatively safe under normal industrial conditions, based on its hazard classification (skin irritation category 2, serious eye damage\/eye irritation category 2A, acute aquatic toxicity category 2), improper handling may pose risks to human health and the aquatic environment. The product GHS label signal word is "Warning", and it carries two pictograms: GHS07 (exclamation mark) and GHS09 (environment).
Regarding the risk of human exposure, OP-13 is clearly irritating to skin and eyes. Contact may cause redness, pain, and other discomfort. Inhalation of vapors or mists may also cause respiratory irritation. Therefore, operators must wear protective gloves, protective goggles\/face shield, and operate in a well-ventilated area, thoroughly washing exposed areas after operation. Eating, drinking, or smoking is strictly prohibited during operation to prevent accidental ingestion.
In terms of environmental safety, OP-13 is toxic to aquatic organisms. According to ecotoxicological data, its 96-hour LC50 for fish is 1–10 mg\/L, and its 48-hour EC50 for daphnia is 1–10 mg\/L, indicating that even low concentrations may cause long-term adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, strict measures must be taken to prevent the product from entering sewers, surface water, or soil. In case of spillage, use inert absorbent materials to contain and collect the spill, place it in sealed containers for professional disposal.
| Body Part to Protect | Protective Requirement | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Hands | Protective gloves | To prevent direct skin contact, category 2 skin irritant |
| Eyes | Protective goggles\/face shield | Category 2A serious eye irritation, must be strictly protected |
| Respiratory | Respiratory protection (if needed) | Avoid inhalation of vapors or mists, ensure good ventilation |
| Environment | Prevent leakage and release | Toxic to aquatic organisms, do not discharge into water bodies |
Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing immediately, wash thoroughly with plenty of soap and water. Contaminated clothing must be washed before reuse.
Eye contact: Immediately rinse with plenty of water for several minutes. If wearing contact lenses and easy to do so, remove them and continue rinsing. If irritation persists, seek medical attention immediately.
Inhalation: Move the person to fresh air immediately and maintain an open airway. If symptoms persist, seek medical attention immediately.
Ingestion: Rinse mouth, do NOT induce vomiting, seek medical attention immediately and show the product container or label.
Spill handling: Use inert absorbent materials (such as sand, vermiculite) to contain and collect spilled material, place in sealed containers for disposal, avoid discharge into sewers or the environment.
