Isooctanol penetrant OE-35 (isooctanol polyoxyethylene (35) ether) is a nonionic surfactant with relatively high safety. It is not classified as a hazardous substance under GHS. Its acute oral LD50 in rats is greater than 5,000 mg/kg, it is non-irritating to the skin (primary irritation index less than 0.5), and eye contact causes only mild irritation that is fully reversible within 72 hours. Nevertheless, standardized chemical product handling procedures must be followed during actual operation to ensure personnel safety and product quality.
The core considerations during use include three aspects: first, operator protection — wear chemical safety goggles and nitrile gloves, ensure good ventilation in the operating area, avoid inhaling vapors or mists, and prohibit eating, drinking, or smoking during operation; second, storage management — store the product sealed in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse, maintain ambient temperature between 5–35°C, keep away from fire, heat sources, and direct sunlight, and store separately from incompatible substances such as strong acids and strong oxidizers; third, emergency preparedness — in the event of a spill or contact accident, handle promptly according to established plans.
In addition, the product has excellent resistance to acids, alkalis, and hard water. When used in compounding, take advantage of its good compatibility with nonionic, anionic, and cationic auxiliaries. However, always seal the container immediately after each use to avoid prolonged exposure of the product to humid air, which may cause moisture absorption, or exposure to extremely low temperatures that may cause freezing and affect performance.

In textile printing and dyeing pretreatment (desizing, scouring, bleaching), it is recommended to prepare OE-35 into a working solution of 0.5–3 g/L according to process conditions. Its instantaneous wetting and low-foam properties can shorten process time and reduce rinsing water consumption. For metal surface cleaning, adding 1–5% to acid pickling or alkaline cleaning agents significantly enhances the penetration and removal of stubborn soils such as cutting fluids and rust preventive oils. When used for pesticide synergism, add 2–8% of the total formulation, effectively reducing the surface tension of the spray liquid and improving spreading and retention on hydrophobic leaf surfaces.
Due to its excellent compatibility in compounding, OE-35 can be flexibly used with nonionic, anionic, and cationic auxiliaries as a synergistic component to enhance the spreading and adsorption capacity of the overall formulation. It also demonstrates excellent degreasing performance under low-temperature conditions, especially suitable for energy-saving process designs.
