Stearic Acid Polyoxyethylene Ether SG-40 is a high-purity nonionic surfactant with excellent O/W emulsifying ability, strong electrolyte resistance, and good compatibility. It is widely used in various industrial fields such as personal care, textiles, metalworking, pesticide formulations, and papermaking.
Detailed Description
Stearic Acid Polyoxyethylene Ether SG-40 (also known as PEG-40 Stearate, Polyoxyethylene (40) Stearate, CAS No.: 9004-99-3) is a nonionic surfactant produced by Guoli Chemical through the condensation of stearic acid and ethylene oxide. At room temperature, the product appears as a white to slightly yellow waxy solid with good dispersibility in water and various organic solvents. Its molecular structure features both hydrophilic polyoxyethylene chains and lipophilic stearic acid groups, giving it excellent interfacial activity.
The core characteristics of this product include: outstanding O/W emulsifying ability, forming stable and fine emulsions over a wide temperature and pH range; excellent electrolyte resistance, maintaining surface activity even in acids, bases, and high-concentration salt solutions; nonionic nature allowing free combination with anionic, cationic, and amphoteric surfactants for synergistic effects; as well as multifunctional wetting, spreading, and solid particle dispersion capabilities.
In terms of safety and environmental protection, SG-40 is classified as a non-hazardous substance with extremely low acute oral toxicity (rat LD50 > 5000 mg/kg), no skin or eye irritation, no sensitization, and good biodegradability, aligning with the concept of sustainable development.

Application Suggestions
With its multifunctional properties, SG-40 has wide applications in the following areas:
- Personal Care & Cosmetics: Used as an O/W emulsifier and solubilizer in creams, lotions, shampoos, body washes, etc., providing fine foam and a refreshing skin feel, and promoting uniform penetration of active ingredients.
- Textile & Dyeing Auxiliaries: Exerts multiple functions such as emulsification, softening, antistatic, and leveling, improving fiber hand feel, reducing static buildup, enhancing dyeing uniformity and fabric comfort, and can also be used in synthetic fiber oils.
- Metalworking Fluids: Acts as an efficient lubricating and emulsifying component for formulating emulsified cutting fluids and grinding fluids, enhancing system stability and cooling/lubrication effects, with auxiliary anti-rust function.
- Pesticide Formulations: Serves as an emulsifying and dispersing carrier, optimizing the dispersion of active ingredients in water, improving spray adhesion and absorption efficiency, and enhancing control efficacy.
- Papermaking Industry: Used as a deinking agent for waste paper and a paper softener, promoting ink separation and improving paper softness, suitable for high-end household papers such as toilet paper and facial tissues.
Precautions
- It is recommended to wear nitrile protective gloves and safety goggles during operation, and ensure good ventilation in the workplace.
- Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse, away from heat sources and strong oxidants. Seal immediately after opening to prevent moisture absorption.
- The melting point of the product is about 30—40°C; storage temperature should be controlled between 5—35°C to avoid melting and caking at high temperatures or solidification and deterioration at low temperatures.
- In case of leakage, collect with inert absorbent materials and avoid entry into drains or water bodies.
- Waste can be disposed of by incineration in accordance with local regulations. Packaging containers can be recycled (if uncontaminated).
