Span S-20 (sorbitan monolaurate, HLB value about 8.6) is a typical nonionic water-in-oil (W/O) emulsifier. In practical use, it is usually first mixed with the oil phase components in the formulation (such as mineral oil, vegetable oil, synthetic esters), heated to 40–70°C to fully dissolve and stir evenly to form a transparent oil phase mixture. Since this product disperses in water as a milky emulsion and does not completely dissolve, pre-dissolving it in the oil phase is a key step to ensure emulsification efficiency.
After the oil phase is prepared, slowly add the water phase to the oil phase while stirring with a high-speed shear homogenizer (recommended speed 3000–8000 rpm). The emulsification temperature is recommended to be maintained at 45–60°C, and the homogenization time depends on the batch size, usually 3–10 minutes. If a fine cream or lotion is to be prepared, it is recommended to subsequently combine with a hydrophilic emulsifier (such as Tween series) to adjust the overall HLB value and improve the long-term stability of the system. After emulsification, the material should be slowly cooled to room temperature to avoid crystallization or demulsification caused by rapid cooling.
When used as a dispersant or solubilizer, Span S-20 can be directly added to the mixed system of pigments, powders, and solvents to be dispersed. Through grinding or high-speed dispersion treatment, it can effectively wet the particle surface, reduce interfacial tension, and prevent agglomeration and sedimentation. In pesticide emulsifiable concentrate formulations, this product is used in combination with hydrophilic emulsifiers, usually accounting for 3%–8% of the total weight of the formulation, helping to spontaneously form a stable dilute emulsion when the pesticide is diluted.
