Tween T-80 (Polyoxyethylene (20) Sorbitan Monooleate) is a classic O/W nonionic emulsifier with an HLB value as high as 15. Its usage and dosage vary significantly depending on the application field, typically involving direct addition to the oil or water phase with stirring to dissolve.

Detailed Instructions

Tween T-80 is a light yellow to amber viscous liquid at room temperature (viscosity about 600 mPa·s at 25°C). It is easily soluble in water, benzene, and organic solvents. When used, it can be directly added to the oil or water phase of the system to be emulsified and stirred to dissolve. Due to its hygroscopic nature, the product should be used promptly after opening and resealed for storage. For solubilization of poorly soluble substances, Tween T-80 is generally pre-mixed with the substance to be solubilized (such as fragrances, essential oils, fat-soluble drugs, etc.) until uniform, then water is slowly added with continuous stirring to form a clear or translucent solubilized system.

As a high HLB value (15) O/W emulsifier, Tween T-80 is often used in combination with low HLB emulsifiers (such as Span series) to achieve a wider emulsification range and a more stable emulsion system. Its cloud point is approximately 93°C (1% aqueous solution), providing good stability in high-temperature processes. The product is chemically mild and maintains good performance in acidic, alkaline, and hard water environments. However, it should be noted that hydrolysis may occur under strong acidic or alkaline conditions, so long-term use in such extreme environments is not recommended.

Regarding dosage: Insufficient addition will not achieve the desired emulsification and solubilization effect, while excessive amounts may cause stickiness, increased foaming, or cost waste. It is recommended to determine the optimal dosage for a specific formula through small-scale trials. The Guoli Chemical database does not provide precise dosage data for each specific application area; the following recommended dosages are general reference ranges based on industry practical experience.

Application Recommendations

The following are recommended usage methods and dosage ranges for typical application fields (based on general industry experience; actual dosage should be verified through small-scale trials):

  • Pharmaceutical Preparation Solubilization: Premix Tween T-80 with poorly soluble drugs, then slowly add water for injection or buffer solution with stirring to dissolve. Recommended dosage: Generally 5 to 20 times the drug amount, with a final concentration of 0.5% to 5% in the product. For injectable preparations, strictly follow pharmacopoeia standards and use injection-grade product.
  • Food Emulsification and Stabilization: Directly add to the oil phase, heat to melt, then mix with the water phase and homogenize, or use in combination with other emulsifiers. Recommended dosage: 0.1%~0.5% for bakery products, 0.1%~0.3% for ice cream and dairy products, 0.05%~0.1% for beverages (based on total product weight).
  • Cosmetic Creams/Lotions: Add to the oil phase as the primary emulsifier (can be combined with
