Castor Oil Polyoxyethylene Ether EL-10 (CAS No.: 61791-12-6) is a nonionic surfactant formed by the condensation of castor oil with 10 moles of ethylene oxide, with a molecular weight of approximately 1300. The product appears as a light yellow to yellow transparent oily liquid, with an active ingredient content ≥99%. It is insoluble in water (thus has no cloud point or critical micelle concentration), but is readily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether, which primarily makes it suitable for water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion systems.
From physicochemical properties, the HLB value of EL-10 is about 6.4, classifying it as a lipophilic emulsifier with excellent W/O emulsifying ability. Its acid value is ≤1.5 mgKOH/g, saponification value ranges from 90 to 110 mgKOH/g, hydroxyl value is 80 to 100 mgKOH/g, iodine value is 30 to 45 gI₂/100g, and unsaturation is 1.2 to 1.8. These indicators reflect the content of ester bonds and hydroxyl groups, as well as the degree of unsaturation in fatty acid chains, which are key parameters affecting emulsifying and lubricating performance. The product density is 1.04 to 1.06 g/cm³, kinematic viscosity ranges from 200 to 400 mm²/s (at 40°C), and refractive index is 1.460 to 1.470.
In terms of safety and stability, the flash point of EL-10 is >150°C, making it a non-flammable liquid. It is chemically stable at room temperature, but should be kept away from strong acids, strong bases, and strong oxidizing agents. The pH value of a 1% aqueous solution is between 5.0 and 7.0, showing weak acidity to neutrality. The product is hygroscopic; containers should be kept sealed during storage, and it is recommended to store in a cool, dry place at 0°C to 40°C. Foam performance is low-foaming, which is beneficial for reducing foam interference in industrial applications.
