Span S-20 coconut acid primarily achieves its excellent water-in-oil emulsification and dispersion functions through three core steps: premixing in the oil phase, emulsification, and combined use.

Detailed Description

Span S-20 coconut acid is a light yellow to amber viscous liquid, flowable at room temperature (melting point <10°C). As a non-ionic water-in-oil (W/O) emulsifier, its HLB value is 8.6, which determines that it is more easily soluble in oil and organic solvents, and disperses into an emulsion in water. Therefore, the most standard method of use is to directly add the required amount of Span S-20 to the oil phase component of the formula, heat and melt it together with oils, waxes, or oil-soluble active ingredients, and stir evenly. The temperature is usually recommended to be controlled at 50-70°C to ensure good fluidity and thorough mixing with other raw materials.

In the emulsification stage, slowly add the hot oil phase premixed with Span S-20 to the vigorously stirred water phase to form a stable W/O emulsion. For dispersion applications, such as dispersing pigments or inorganic sunscreens, it is also recommended to first mix and grind Span S-20 with the powder or fully wet the powder in the oil phase, which effectively reduces interfacial tension and prevents particle flocculation. Its low-foaming characteristic is especially suitable for industrial systems requiring rapid demulsification or clarification.

In practical formulation design, Span S-20 is often used in combination with high HLB value emulsifiers (such as Tween series) to obtain broader emulsification efficiency and stability. The recommended dosage for general W/O systems is 1-5% of the total formulation weight; when used as a pigment dispersant, the dosage is typically 1-10% of the pigment weight. The specific optimal dosage needs to be determined through small-scale trials, as it is affected by the type of oil phase, solid content, and final product viscosity requirements.

Application Suggestions

  • Personal Care Products: Skin creams, lotions, sunscreens. Recommended dosage 1-3%, directly add to the oil phase (such as mineral oil, silicone oil, synthetic esters) and heat to about 60℃ to dissolve, used to build water-in-oil systems, imparting a light feel to the product.
  • Coatings and Inks: Used to wet and disperse pigments and fillers. Recommended dosage 2-5% of the pigment weight, can be added during the grinding stage to effectively prevent floating color and flocculation, improve color strength and storage stability.
  • Pesticide Formulations: Used as an emulsifier for W/O or EW (emulsion in water). Recommended to be used in combination with anionic emulsifiers (such as calcium salts) or high HLB non-ionic emulsifiers, dosage 5-10%, to enhance the wetting and spreading of the spray liquid on hydrophobic leaf surfaces.
  • Metalworking Fluids: Provide emulsification and lubrication in cutting fluids and grinding fluids. Recommended dosage 3-8%, directly add to the base oil, can be used with petroleum sulfonate, etc., to form a stable emulsified system.

Precautions

  • Operational Protection: Although this product is non-irritating to skin and eyes (PII=0), it is still recommended to wear protective goggles and gloves during operation to avoid unnecessary prolonged contact.
  • Temperature Control: It is a viscous liquid at room temperature, viscosity increases at low temperatures. Before use, it can be preheated to 30-40℃ for easy pouring and dispersion, but avoid prolonged heating above 80℃ to prevent darkening of color.
  • Storage Requirements: Store in a dry, cool place at 5-40°C, keep the container sealed. Avoid repeated freezing and thawing to prevent affecting product uniformity and performance.
  • Formulation Stability: Good chemical stability, resistant to acids, alkalis, and electrolytes, but prolonged contact under strong acid or strong base conditions (pH<2 or pH>12) may cause hydrolysis. Pay attention to the final pH value of the system during formulation.
