OS-15 (AEO-15) is a high-performance nonionic surfactant produced by Guoli Chemical. It appears as a white to slightly yellowish waxy solid (melting point approximately 20~25°C), with a molecular weight of about 846 and an active content ≥99%. The product is obtained by the addition of about 15 moles of ethylene oxide to C12-14 fatty alcohol. The long polyoxyethylene chain in the molecular structure imparts high hydrophilicity, making it readily soluble in water. With an HLB value as high as 14.5, it is classified as a hydrophilic emulsifier.
Its main features are concentrated in six aspects. First, excellent emulsification and solubilization performance: it can efficiently emulsify various oil phases and has significant solubilization effects on insoluble substances. The critical micelle concentration is only about 0.005%, allowing it to function at very low dosages. Second, strong chemical stability: it maintains structural integrity over a wide pH range, is resistant to acids and alkalis, and is insensitive to calcium and magnesium ions, remaining effective in hard water environments. Third, outstanding surface activity: the surface tension of a 0.1% aqueous solution is as low as about 30 mN/m, with strong wetting and penetrating power. The cloud point under 5% NaCl conditions is 81~85°C, ensuring performance at high temperatures. Fourth, moderate foam: it exhibits low to moderate foaming characteristics, which helps reduce foam interference in industrial cleaning. Fifth, broad compatibility: it can be compounded with anionic, cationic, and other nonionic surfactants to produce synergistic effects. Sixth, low toxicity and safety: the oral LD50 in rats is >2000 mg/kg, with no carcinogenic or mutagenic effects, and a flash point >200°C, making it suitable for cosmetics and household cleaning formulations.
