How to use OS-15 (AEO-15)?

Answer

OS-15 (AEO-15) needs to be used with appropriate dissolution, addition amount and compounding method according to the specific application scenario to fully exert its excellent emulsifying, dispersing and wetting properties.

Detailed Description

OS-15 (AEO-15) is a nonionic surfactant, appearing as a white waxy solid, with an active content ≥99%, HLB value of about 14.5, and good water solubility. In practical applications, the usage method mainly varies according to its role in different formulations—such as emulsifier, dispersant, wetting agent or leveling agent. Generally speaking, regardless of the purpose, the user first needs to completely dissolve or uniformly disperse it in the system before proceeding to subsequent process steps.

Since OS-15 is a waxy solid at room temperature, it is usually added by heating dissolution or pre-dispersion during formulation. When used in an aqueous system, the measured amount of OS-15 can be directly added to hot water at 40–50°C with moderate stirring until completely dissolved to form a transparent or translucent solution, and then mixed with other components. In an oil-water emulsification system, it can be first dissolved in the oil phase (heated to about 40–50°C) or the water phase, and then homogenized and emulsified according to the O/W emulsification process.

Application Suggestions

According to the usage requirements of different industries, the following are specific usage methods and recommended addition amounts for each major application field (based on general industrial practice, specific dosages should be optimized through formulation experiments):

  • Industrial and Household Detergents: Recommended addition amount is 1~5% of the total formulation. Compounding OS-15 with anionic surfactants (such as LAS, AES) can significantly improve detergency and hard water resistance. It should be dissolved in warm water at 40~50°C with stirring, and then other components are added in sequence.
  • Textile Dyeing Leveling Agent/Dispersant: When used as a leveling agent in the dye bath, the recommended dosage is 0.5~2 g/L (based on bath ratio). First dissolve in warm water around 50°C, then add to the dye bath and circulate uniformly before introducing the fabric. When used as a dye dispersant, the dosage is generally 5~15% of the dye weight.
  • Pesticide Emulsifier and Wetting Agent: In pesticide emulsifiable concentrate or water-emulsion formulations, OS-15 is often compounded with anionic emulsifiers (such as calcium salt), with a total emulsifier dosage of about 8~15% of the technical material. When used alone as a wetting agent, it is recommended to add 0.05~0.1% in the foliar spray solution.
  • Metal Surface Cleaner: Recommended addition amount is 2~6%, used in combination with alkaline auxiliaries (such as sodium carbonate, sodium silicate) and chelating agents. Better oil removal effect is achieved at cleaning temperatures of 50~70°C.
  • Cosmetic Emulsifier: When used as a primary or co-emulsifier in O/W creams and lotions, the recommended dosage is 1~3%. Working synergistically with auxiliary emulsifiers such as fatty alcohols or mono-glycerides, it can form a fine and stable cream.
  • Paper Deinking Agent: In the deinking pulp system, the addition amount is generally 0.1~0.3% of the absolute dry fiber mass, added before the pulper or flotation cell to promote ink detachment and flocculation.
  • Leather Processing Auxiliary: In the soaking and degreasing processes, the recommended dosage is 0.5~1% of the hide weight, dissolved in warm water at 40~45°C and then added to the drum.

Precautions

  • Dissolution Operation: Do not directly dissolve the waxy solid in cold water; it is recommended to use warm water at about 40~50°C with continuous stirring; otherwise, dissolution is slow and easy to form lumps. To improve dissolution efficiency, it can be sliced or crushed before addition.
  • Safety Protection: OS-15 is a skin irritant (GHS Category 2, H315) and eye irritant (Category 2, H319). Operators must wear impermeable gloves such as nitrile and chemical safety goggles to avoid skin and eye contact. In case of contact, immediately flush with plenty of running water for at least 15 minutes.
  • Storage and Handling: Store at a temperature between 5~35°C. If the product freezes in winter, allow it to thaw naturally at room temperature; do not heat with open flame . After opening, seal promptly to prevent moisture absorption.
  • Compatibility and Stability: OS-15 is a nonionic surfactant, stable under normal acidic and alkaline conditions, and can be compounded with anionic, cationic and other nonionic surfactants. However, its performance is affected by the cloud point (81~85°C); avoid prolonged heating of aqueous working solutions above the cloud point, as precipitation may cause performance degradation.
  • Environmental Discharge: According to database information, this product is chronically toxic to aquatic organisms (H412); do not discharge undiluted or large quantities of the product
