PEG400DO (Polyethylene Glycol 400 Dioleate) is a nonionic surfactant esterified from polyethylene glycol 400 and oleic acid, with CAS number 9004-96-0. At room temperature, it appears as a light yellow to amber liquid, exhibiting excellent emulsifying, dispersing, and wetting properties.

Detailed Description

PEG400DO, full name Polyethylene Glycol 400 Dioleate, also commonly known as PEG-8 Dioleate, is a diester-type nonionic surfactant prepared by esterification of polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG-8) with two molecules of oleic acid. Its molecular formula can be represented as C17H33COO(CH2CH2O)nOCC17H33 (n≈8), with a molecular weight around 900~1000, and diester content ≥90%.

As one of the flagship products of Guoli Chemical, PEG400DO, with its balanced hydrophilic-lipophilic properties (HLB value approximately 8.5), exhibits good tolerance in acidic, alkaline, and hard water conditions. Its compatibility is flexible, allowing it to work with anionic, cationic, and other nonionic surfactant systems, maintaining stable performance in various formulations. The product can be dispersed in water and dissolved in organic solvents such as ethanol and acetone. It has low foaming characteristics, making it an ideal choice for formula engineers designing emulsifying systems with low to medium HLB values.

It should be noted that due to the presence of ester bonds in the molecular structure of PEG400DO, the ester bonds are prone to hydrolysis under strong alkaline conditions. Therefore, during formulation design, prolonged coexistence with strong alkaline components should be avoided to ensure stable product performance.

Application Suggestions

With its core functions of emulsifying, dispersing, wetting, and solubilizing, PEG400DO plays a key role in multiple industrial and consumer product fields. The main application scenarios are as follows:

  • Textile Oils: Used as a key component in synthetic fiber spinning oils, providing lubricity and antistatic ability, preventing fiber damage during stretching and winding, ensuring smooth processing and improving the hand feel of finished products.
  • Industrial Lubricants: Formulating water-soluble cutting fluids, hydraulic fluids, and extreme pressure lubricants, acting as efficient emulsifiers and rust inhibitors, helping the oil phase disperse stably in the water phase, extending fluid service life.
  • Metalworking Fluids: In processes such as turning, milling, grinding, and stamping, promoting the formation of stable oil-in-water emulsions, reducing tool wear, improving machining precision and workpiece surface finish.
  • Personal Care Products: Suitable for facial cleansers, body washes, makeup removers, and shampoos, serving as a mild emulsifying and moisturizing ingredient, imparting a silky after-wash feel. Recommended dosage should be adjusted according to specific formulation systems.
  • Agrochemical Formulations: Used in pesticide emulsifiable concentrates (EC), oil-in-water emulsions (EW), and microemulsions (ME) to enhance the dispersion stability of active ingredients and their wetting and spreading ability on target surfaces, improving efficacy utilization.
  • Other Applications: Can also be used as pigment dispersants, ink additives, and components of industrial cleaners, leveraging its multifunctional surfactant advantages.

Precautions

  • Safety Protection: This product may cause skin irritation (H315), serious eye irritation (H319), and respiratory irritation (H335). When handling, wear protective gloves, protective clothing, eye protection, and face protection, and avoid inhaling vapors or mist.
  • First Aid Measures: In case of eye contact, rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses if present and continue rinsing. If eye irritation persists, seek medical attention (P305+P351+P338 & P337+P313).
  • Workplace Hygiene: Wash thoroughly after handling (P264), and avoid inhaling dust/fume/gas/mist/vapors/spray (P261).
  • Storage Conditions: Chemically stable under normal storage conditions. Keep in tightly closed packaging, store in a cool, dry place, and avoid contact with strong alkaline substances to prevent ester bond hydrolysis.
  • Ecological Impact: Acute oral toxicity LD₅₀ > 5000 mg/kg (rat), classified as low toxicity, readily biodegradable. However, it may still cause harmful effects to aquatic life, so avoid direct discharge into water bodies.
