Question

How to use polypropylene glycol PPG-400? What is the recommended addition amount?

Answer
2026-06-06 官方文档 聚丙二醇PPG-400

The usage method of polypropylene glycol PPG-400 depends on the specific application field, and there is no unified standard for the addition amount, which must be determined through experiments based on formulation requirements and process conditions.

Detailed Description

Polypropylene glycol PPG-400 (CAS No.: 25322-69-4) is a nonionic surfactant, appearing as a colorless to slightly yellow transparent viscous liquid, with a molecular weight of about 380~420, and a hydroxyl value of 260~300 mgKOH/g. Its molecular structure contains primary hydroxyl groups and ether bonds, giving it excellent solubility, reactivity, and surface activity. The usage method varies greatly depending on the application scenario: In the polyurethane industry, PPG-400 directly participates in the polymerization reaction as a soft segment polyol component, typically reacting with isocyanates (such as TDI, MDI) and other polyols, catalysts, blowing agents, etc., according to the formula ratio; In the personal care and pharmaceutical fields, it can be directly added to the water phase or oil phase and stirred to dissolve, used as a humectant, lubricant, or solubilizer; In lubricants and industrial fluids, it can be used alone or compounded with other base oils.

Since PPG-400 is easily soluble in various solvents such as water, alcohols, esters, and ketones, solubility is usually not an issue in practical operations. It is recommended to slowly add it to the formulation system under stirring conditions to ensure uniform dispersion. If used for polyurethane synthesis, the moisture content must be strictly controlled (moisture of this product ≤0.1%) to avoid side reactions between water and isocyanates. The product has low foam characteristics, with a cloud point of about 50°C (1% aqueous solution), and the aqueous solution may become turbid when approaching or exceeding the cloud point temperature, so attention should be paid to the operating temperature conditions.

Polyurethane Coatings/Adhesives As a polyol component involved in prepolymer or curing system 5%~30% of resin solid content
Personal Care Products (Creams/Lotions) Directly added to water phase or oil phase, stirred until uniformly dissolved 1%~10%
Pharmaceutical Ointments/Suppository Bases Melted and mixed with other base materials, then cooled and molded 5%~30% (depending on formulation)
Synthetic Lubricant Base Oil Used alone or compounded with ester oils, PAO, etc. 10%~100%
Metalworking Fluids Added as a lubricity additive or co-solvent in the formulation 5%~20%
Defoamer Raw Material Compounded with hydrophobic silica, emulsifiers, etc. to prepare defoamers 20%~60%
Mold Release Agent Component Compounded with other mold release ingredients, diluted and sprayed for use 5%~30%

Usage Operation Recommendations

  • Preheating: When the product viscosity increases at low temperatures in winter, it is recommended to preheat in a 20~40°C environment before use.
