Polypropylene glycol PPG-400 is a low-toxicity nonionic surfactant with an acute oral toxicity LD₅₀ > 2000 mg/kg (rat), no skin irritation (New Zealand white rabbit test), and no sensitization (negative in guinea pig closed patch test), making it relatively safe overall. However, this does not mean that operational procedures can be ignored — the product may cause slight and transient eye irritation (Draize score ≤2 in rabbit eye test, recovery within 24 hours), so eye protection is the key point during operation.
During use, the low hygroscopicity of PPG-400 is one of its advantages, but prolonged exposure to air will still gradually absorb moisture, affecting product purity and performance in moisture-sensitive applications such as polyurethane synthesis. Therefore, the container should be sealed promptly after opening. The product has a high flash point (closed cup approximately 220–230°C) and is not easily ignited at room temperature, but it may still form flammable vapors at high temperatures or near open flames, so the working area must be well-ventilated and kept away from ignition sources.
From a chemical compatibility perspective, PPG-400 exhibits good stability in acidic, alkaline, and hard water media, and is not easily hydrolyzed or deactivated, but contact with strong oxidizers should be avoided to prevent hazardous reactions. In formulation applications, the product has excellent compatibility with many organic solvents, resins, and polymers, but small-scale compatibility testing is recommended before compounding to ensure system stability.
