The main component of Peregal O-25 is fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene (25) ether (also known as octadecyl alcohol polyoxyethylene (25) ether), which is a nonionic surfactant.

Detailed Description

The chemical name of Peregal O-25 is fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether, specifically polyoxyethylene (25) stearyl ether, with the English name Polyoxyethylene (25) stearyl ether or Fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene (25) ether. This product is prepared by condensation of natural fatty alcohol (primarily stearyl alcohol) with ethylene oxide (EO), with an average of 25 EO addition units in the molecule (i.e., EO number = 25), and the CAS number is 68439-49-6.

From the perspective of molecular structure, Peregal O-25 consists of two parts: the lipophilic end is a long-chain octadecyl group (derived from natural stearyl alcohol), and the hydrophilic end is a polyoxyethylene chain (—(OCH₂CH₂)₂₅—OH). It is this amphiphilic structure of "one end lipophilic and the other hydrophilic" that endows it with excellent emulsifying, dispersing, and leveling capabilities. Its general molecular formula can be expressed as: C₁₈H₃₇O(CH₂CH₂O)₂₅H.

Due to the highly stable chemical properties of the ether bond (C—O—C) in the molecule, Peregal O-25 is not easily affected by acids, alkalis, and metal ions in hard water (such as Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺), making it a typical nonionic surfactant. It appears as a white to slightly yellowish flaky or blocky solid, easily soluble in water (especially hot water above 60°C), with an HLB value of about 16.0–17.0 and a cloud point >100°C.

Application Suggestions

Peregal O-25 is mainly used in the following fields due to its unique molecular structure (long EO chain + octadecyl group):

  • Textile dyeing and finishing: As a leveling agent and soaping agent, recommended dosage 0.2–1.0 g/L, retarding the dyeing rate, preventing color unevenness, and effectively removing loose color at high temperature.
  • Industrial cleaning: For formulating metal degreasers and hard surface cleaners, used in combination with soda ash or phosphates at 50–80°C, quickly emulsifying mineral oils and animal/vegetable oils.
  • Cosmetics: As an O/W emulsifier and solubilizer, used in creams, lotions, shampoos, etc., recommended dosage 0.5%–5.0%.
  • Pesticide formulations: Used as a nonionic emulsifier component in emulsions in water (EW) and microemulsions (ME), enhancing wetting, spreading, and storage stability of pesticide solutions.
  • Paper industry: As a wetting agent and softener, improving fiber dispersion uniformity and paper smoothness.

Precautions

Peregal O-25 is a solid product and is not easily dissolved directly at room temperature. It is recommended to dissolve it in hot water above 60°C with stirring, or to prepare a stock solution in advance for accurate metered addition. Storage temperature is recommended to be controlled between 5°C and 40°C. Below 5°C, turbidity or solidification may occur; however, after warming to room temperature and stirring evenly, it can still be used without affecting product quality. Wear protective gloves and goggles during operation to avoid direct contact with eyes and skin.
